Our speakers and presentations:

Our presentations provide the unique opportunity to engage in a dialogue with people who have experienced homelessness, addictions and mental health issues. The range of presentation topics vary depending on the nature of the audience and the speaking request. Below is a list of workshops and presentations we have delivered in the past.

The role of supportive housing in the lives of people who suffer from mental health issues

  • Ideal for high schools, neighbourhood meetings, community/faith groups
  • Provides an overview of key issues as well as insights into how homelessness, mental illness, and supportive housing impact the lives of real people
  • Includes an introduction to key issues and statistics; four personal stories told by members of the Dream Team; and a Q&A period
  • Ideally, this presentation requires at least an hour, but it is possible to do in 45 minutes if necessary.

The Impact of Supportive Housing in Surrounding Communities

  • This presentation highlights the findings of our report, We Are Neighbours: The Impact of Supportive Housing on Community, Social, Economic and Attitude Changes. Our study shows that not only does supportive housing not hurt property values or increase crime, but it actually makes important contributions to the strength of neighbourhoods.
  • This presentation generally requires an hour to an hour and a half, and it is ideal for university classrooms, conferences, and any group that is interested in learning about community-based research.

The Dream Team Road Show

  • This workshop was developed to explore issues of discriminatory zoning practices in different communities throughout Ontario.
  • Building affordable supportive housing for people who suffer from mental health issues is often met with opposition from local residents; moreover, burdensome zoning practices may provide the basis for discrimination.
  • This workshop explores different ways of overcoming barriers. It also discusses the actions communities can take to help ensure that zoning bylaws are not discriminatory.
  • This presentation generally requires aproximately 1.5 hours.
