Meet The Dream Team

Esther Mwangi

Esther came to Canada from Kenya as a student to do Grade 13 and go to University. This was her first time living away from her family, friends and community.  She felt isolated, but was determined to do well.  She completed grade 13 and went to York University where she was befriended by a seemingly harmless Christian group which turned out to be a cult.  This group gave her a sense of belonging.  When trying to leave the cult, she almost immediately had a breakdown.  She dropped out of university and was admitted to the Wellesley Hospital psychiatric unit.  Once when she was discharged from the hospital she was given permanent housing with Houselink.  Her admissions to hospital were greatly reduced.  Supportive housing has made a great impact on Esther’s life.  She is glad to be able to speak out for the Dream Team to try and get more supportive housing.
